About Us

The Garden Centre Group Co-Op is a member-owned and operated buying and networking cooperative.

The GCGC works with domestic and international vendors and specializes in the direct importation of offshore containers. The hundreds of domestic vendor programs allow for competitive purchasing and above average margins. The import program allow for unique products and extremely profitable margins.

The GCGC consists of a collection of progressive, independently owned garden centre retailers located across Canada. Members meet four times annually to network with each other, share ideas and success stories, and to discuss negotiated supplier programs.

Meetings

Members meet four times annually to network with each other, share ideas and success stories, order direct import products, and to discuss negotiated supplier programs. Meetings are productive, engaging, participatory, and professional. Presentations are made by the board of directors and committee chairpersons. Decisions are made by way of vote. The informal networking that occurs at the meetings is one of the most valuable benefits of being a member of the GCGC. The invaluable success stories, marketing ideas and business discussions that are shared without reserve, are what truly propel our businesses.

Committees

The success of the GCGC is fundamentally dependent on the active participation of its members. Therefore members are expected to participate in one of many committees. This involves negotiating discounts and terms with vendors which fall under that committee, seeking out new vendors and innovative products, and keeping members informed with product information, and any changes to vendor information. The committees include: Nursery Plants, Seeds and Bulbs, Fertilizers and Chemicals, Giftware, Christmas, Perennials, Florist Supplies, Patio and Leisure, Pottery, Trade Show, Water Gardening, Hardgoods, and Fashion Apparel.

Tradeshow

Each November, the GCGC holds a large-scale tradeshow in Mississauga, ON, that is exclusive to GCGC members and their suppliers. At this dedicated buying show, vendors offer early booking discounts above and beyond those which are typically offered. The tradeshow is mutually beneficial to our members and vendors, as members are forced to complete their spring bookings early, and vendors are able to fill the orders in a timely way. During this event, the GCGC also hosts an annual gala dinner, at which members and vendors socialize while raising funds with a silent auction for Parkinson Society Canada. Over the years, GCGC has donated over $500,000.00 to Parkinson Society Canada!

Tours

Every two years, members gather in a Canadian or American center to tour its garden centers, local nurseries or growing operations, and other vendors with whom we work closely. These organized tours offer our members an ideal opportunity for networking, as well as sourcing ideas and inspiration from other retailers.

Importation

Each year, a number of GCGC members travel to international trade shows to source products for offshore importation. This allows our stores to feature unique and innovative items which cannot be found at the mass retailers. GCGC members are free to purchase as much or as little import product as require. There is no pressure or requirement to buy into the import programs. The GCGC office is very experienced with direct importing as the group imports directly on a regular basis.

If you are a Canadian retailer and are interested in joining the GCGC, please contact the member nearest you by clicking here or contact our head office.
